View Full Version : Can I mix run-flats in front with non-flats in rear?

When I bought my last BMW (2008), I immediately swapped out the run-flats. I thought it was too harsh a ride. I really like the Michelin Pilot Sport tires that I replaced the OEMs with. More than that, I loved the car profile with the 225/45R18's in the front and the 255/40R18's in the rear.

I just bought a 2018 340i and immediately noticed that it no longer had that great appearance with 225/45 run-flats all around.

My question is - can I replace only the rears with NON-run-flat 255/40R18. How would it affect handling? Do I need to do all four? I know I need to have a spare.

Thanks

Hello - check out the link below to an article on this topic. In short, no you shouldn't mix the 2.

A tire salesman telling you to buy 4 tires instead of 2 - you don't say!

Nothing is gonna happen. Just stay with the same brand and model.

If you drive like a little old lady, fine. If you are going to push the tires, you need 4 of the same. Save the run flats for spares. Don't be cheap and dead or injured.

Sounds like exactly what I need to do. I wish I drove more like a little old lady. My passengers would be happier. Appreciate the comments. Thanks.
