BMW key fobs are specific for their battery --- CR 2032 --- and this is what most car key fobs use. What did you install? I also assume you put them in correct side up.

There was cr2450 in the key fob so I used the same, bought two different types of battery and neither did a thing, and yes correct side up

I’ve tried to hold the key fob against the steering column, still get the error message
ive tried to clean and push the pins a little bit up, still get the error message
the key does work, it opens the car and closes, and starts
just get the really annoying error for a few secs in the dash and HUD, no error in the check control
the error message only comes when I get in the car and start it, then goes away and then comes back when I turn the car off

How to Reset a BMW Key Fob
Stick your key in the ignition.
Turn it to the on position.
Then, turn it off.
Next, remove the key.
Finally, hold the unlock button on your key fob as you press the BMW logo button 3 times. Then, let go of the unlock button.
Or said another way:
Take the BMW key fob you wish to program and hold down the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo 3 times before releasing the unlock button. Once again the doors should lock and unlock. When this happens, you are all set!

The OP has a 2016 5 series…his car doesn’t have an ignition to insert a key.
The instructions posted in the quote is for keys that look like this:

To the OP, what battery brand are you using? Make sure there ins’t a protective covering on the back of the battery…or a sticker that tastes nasty to prevent small children from eating them as if they were a piece of candy.

The key fob had a CR2450 battery, I bought that. I also have 2032 but it’s to small for the key fob

For what it's worth, my research has shown that our cars of different years have had both 2450 and 2032 batteries in them. I popped our key open to replace the battery and was surprised to see the 2032. Put a new 2032 in and it works perfectly. I was confused at first as a web site I found clearly said the key should have a 2450 in it. Not possible as a 2450 is much bigger than a 2032.
