I bought a Porter Cable 7336 at Lowe's here in Scottsdale for $99. The 7336 comes with a 6" counterweight, 6" backing plate (for adhesive sanding pads) and a foam polishing pad. I then went to a local auto paint supply store and picked up the Meguiar's 5" DA backing plate (velcro), 6.5" polishing pad, and 6.5" finishing pad. Total investment is about $150 because I already had the polising and waxing compounds at home.
I washed my car, clay-bar'ed it, used the PC 7336 to apply Meguiar's swirl remover 2.0, then used the PC7336 to apply Mequiar's wax. The entire process took about 4 hours, but I can honestly say that my paint has never looked so good. I bought the car ('96 E36 M3) used from a guy that took pretty good care if it, but still nothing like what I've accomplished with the machine polishing / waxing.
Best $150 I spent, in terms of keeping my paint in tip-top shape.
