I'd still prefer a review with real world telephoto zoom lenses from both of the manufacturers, as opposed to using a 'control' lens. And it doesn't seem that they moved the lens/camera to compensate for the difference in sensor sizes.
Fields of view are different here. Canon covered a 1.3x1.3-times = 1.69x smaller field with 10.1 MP than Nikon with 12.1 MP. Thus the pixel density per area of image is 1.42x larger for Canon than Nikon. Other way around, the area the Canon covered with 10.1 MP, the Nikon covered with only 10.1/1.42 = 7.1 MP. Now you're effectively comparing a 7.1 MP camera with a 10.1 MP camera. Which one do you think will give better resolution? What if your reference camera was, say, a Nikon D300? It has a DX format sensor with 1.5x crop factor and 12.3 MP. It has 1.33x smaller sensor area than the 1D Mk III and a higher pixel count, producing 1.62x higher pixel density. It has 2.3x higher pixel density than the D3! Take the same FOV from a 12.3 MP D300 and the 1D Mk III becomes a 6.2 MP camera and the D3 a 4.4 MP camera. Taking the same angular FOV, as was done in this test, which camera do you think will produce a sharper image with better resolution?

this is cool but i feel like this test is Bullshit, ive seen shots with the D3 at those iso's they are much sharper and clearer then that. there is no telling what this guy actually did. for all we know he sharpening the hell out the canon shots. I would of believed it if i hadn't seen raw files from a D3 at these ISO's in person. they are much sharper then this.

The 1Dm3 files do not show signs of being sharpened to me.
But it looks as though the D3 shots are a little OOF. I believe they said they were focused in live view mode wich may attribute to the drastic differences.

btw,
it is totally getting flamed on dpreview. something to do with different pixel densities or something and that he used the same focal length or something.

yeah i dont know whats going on, but ive seen images from the D3, in raw and they are a hell of alot sharper then that.
If you read the whole thread, the test were flawed. FOV and the issue was using Capture 1 with the D3 files. The main guy sent the raw files to someone else and he used ACR to convert them instead. The D3 looks a lot cleaner noise wise while the canon is noisy.
