Finally, after 3 months of experimenting, copying and deleting files, computer harddrive purging and reprogramming I have succeeded in making Carsoft 6.5 SP1 work with my E36!
I can now conduct diagnostics and read live data and have access to all of those nice little extras like door lock programming etc..
Are you using the OBDII under the dash or the 20 pin circle port under the hood? Also, which cable bundle did you go with?

Nice one David,
But can you please tell us all how you did it eventually. I have tried for weeks and can only manage live data using obdII and 20 pin. Pc crashes on any other scan ????? And I have tried this on various Models of BMW.
Cheers

I am using the 20 pin diagnostic port under the hood as my vehicle does not have an OBDII port. I purchased my interface, which is marked "BMW compatible interface V6.5" and has LED's for Power, Service Interval, K-Line Pin 20, K-Line Pin 17 and L-Line Pin 15 off E-Bay.
I purchased Carsoft 6.5 from a vendor in the UK off EBay and downloaded SP1 direct from the Carsoft Web site. PM me for full instructions.
Does your Carsoft read E36 ABS codes? Mine does not and I have never been able to get it to work.

David, Could you post instuctions on here as I cant seem to PM you. I tried to install the SP1 from Carsoft website but after installation would not let me open carsoft, came up with error.... Where am I going wrong ????

To successfully install SP1 you must do it immediately after installing the Carsoft program (i.e. before Crack Installation). You will need to completely uninstall the whole program first.
The notes I used are attached below and are long and some may think a bit tedious - but the program does work! My Carsoft will read the following modules on my E36:- DME/DDE, Instrument Cluster, Airbag, ZKE/ZVM, EGS and EWS. Since I don't have an alarm system, rain or light sensors I think that is the full compliment. Notes are as follows:-
CARSOFT BMW 6.5 + SP1 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS – WINDOWS XP
The procedure EXACTLY for Windows XP is as follows:-
If you have EVER installed ANY version of Carsoft before:-
1. Uninstal the program using the ADD/DELETE Programs function available from the Control panel via SETTINGS on the START menu.
2. Use the Explore function to open the Programs tab from the START menu and delete any CARSOFT folders
3. Use the SEARCH function from the START menu to look for any files or folders containing the word CARSOFT and delete them.
4. Search your Hard Drive for a folder named CM70 or CM75s and use EXPLORE to view its contents. If you have located the correct folder it will contain CARSOFT files with names like "AIRBAG1.DXT" - DELETE THE ENTIRE FOLDER.
5. Restart your computer and from the START menu go to PROGRAMS then ACCESSORIES and select SYSTEM TOOLS then SYSTEM RESTORE and create a new restore point.
6. Once the new restore point has been created, close out of the SYSTEM RESTORE Menu, then go back into ACCESSORIES via the START and PROGRAMS Menus and choose SYSTEM TOOLS then DISK CLEANUP. Select the MORE OPTIONS Tab and under “System Restore,” choose to Delete all but the most recent RESTORE Point and run the Disk Cleanup utility.
7. Open the “My Computer” Icon on the Desktop and right click on the Icon for your Hard Drive, then click “Properties”. Click on the “Tools” Tab when the Properties Dialogue Box opens and choose “Check now”. Two Dialogue boxes will appear asking if you want to check & repair files and scan the hard drive. Check both boxes then the START button. A message will appear telling you that this process can only be performed when the computer re-starts and asking you to confirm whether you wish this to occur. Confirm this request, then restart your computer. Dependent upon how many files you have stored and the size of the Hard Drive, the scanning process may take 2 -3 hours to complete after the system is restarted.
8. Temporarily disable any Anti-Virus or Spyware Programs that may be Running and use the setup program provided with the CARSOFT software to install CARSOFT 6.5.
9. Install SP1 which will search out and install to the CARSOFT/BMW Folder that has been copied to your hard drive.
10. Open the CRACKS Folder and copy ALL of the files contained in the Folder (including Instructions) to the BMW folder located in the newly created CARSOFT program Folder on your Hard Drive. The easiest way to accomplish this is firstly to open the CRACKS Folder then left click on the first file it contains and then each subsequent file whilst holding down the SHIFT key until ALL of the files are highlighted, then choose COPY THESE FILES and when the Dialogue Box pops up, locate the BMW folder in the newly installed CARSOFT folder on your Hard Drive, left click on it and then click on the COPY button.
11. Once this process has been completed, use the EXPLORE function to view the files in the BMW Folder of the newly installed CARSOFT Program. There will be 2 files with 6.5 Icons, labelled CARSOFT and CARSOFTBMW65. Delete the CARSOFT file and re-name CARSOFTBMW65 as CARSOFT.
12. Empty the deleted items from your trash bin and restart the system – CARSOFT 6.5.06 is now installed.
Remember to disable any anit-virus or Spyware programs prior to running the program

David Mc
03-07-2008, 08:47 PM
The car has a build date of December 1997 (1998 model year) but does not have a 16 pin OBDII port. Diagnostics are performed using the round 20 pin port under the hood.

Hmm, first time in this Forum, Can I get Carsoft to work with my OBD1 '95 M3? (also have a OBD1 '94 Canadian E36 318is) I have a 17" Dell Laptop I use for all my Car suff (TIS, Bentley) and would love to have a tool to read/access/reset codes...
And if it will work, whats the all up cost for the program and interface and what are all the things I need? (assume Cable and program, any more?)
Thanks!

My vehicle does not have an OBDII port and I run Carsoft 6.5 on a Dell M65 Laptop. All up cost for the interface and software should not run more than about $150.

Yes, I can view O2 sensor readings, timing, vanos advance, rpm, coolant temperature, airflow, injector signals etc. all using the 20 pin connector under the hood. OBD2 was not adopted as a standard on Australian cars until recently.

look at your laptop port settings first:
start menu>all programs>right click on my computer>left click on properties>hardware>device manager>ports. See what Com port your laptop has. Then use that setting in Carsoft.

what about parity and stop?
David Mc
03-28-2008, 05:13 PM
The cause of this problem is more than likely a dud cable. Disconnect the cables from the interface and check continuity with an ohm meter. I have never had to alter any baud rate, parity, stop or flow control data from the system default settings. I am assuming that you are attempting diagnosis with the ignition on (dash lights illuminated but engine off).

Good job! Now I can look at installing mine as well. Which vendor supplies the interface, or are they all the same and you need to be lucky to get a working unit?
David Mc
03-31-2008, 04:28 AM
Carsoft 6.5 does not read my ABS/ASC module either. I think this maybe due to the fact that the OBC is locked (i.e. does not allow access to the module). I intend to unlock the OBC using the Test 19 function and attempt a diagnostic with the module unlocked to see if Carsoft will read the data then, but have not gotten around to it yet - I will keep you posted. I have encountered one member in Germany who was using defective Crack Software and we managed to correct the problem by using a version known to work, but otherwise you should be able to access live data and reset all modules detected. If not - check all vehicle fuses.
As far as the interface goes, if you are using an interface similar to the one pictured in this thread it should work - if not then the problem is more than likely software rather than hardware related.
Update 20 April 2008 - I tried unlocking the OBC and running a diagnostic with it unlocked - no change in the number of modules accessible. The only modules I have not been able to access are the LCM (this information - VIN number, distance travelled since last service etc is available on my car by running a cluster test), EWS (I don't have an alarm fitted) and ABS/ASC. For the cost of the interface, it is still the best value around as I can diagnose and reset DME, Aibag, ZKE, EGS and Instrument cluster fault codes as well as initiating autolocking options, changing between display units (temp in F or C, distance in miles or kilometres etc.), viewing live data and resetting service and oil change intervals.

David Mc... you, sir, ARE THE MAN! I can't tell you how much I appreciate your detailed install instructions! I had been having the same "connection" troubles as most.. but after following (to the letter!) your instructions + Update from Carsoft... I am finally able to connect! Thank You -- owe ya one!
I do have a question...E38 Programing, Live Data work flawlessly... but whenever I try and perform the Total Diagnosis or individual diagnosis of any item in that same menu... it appears to start initializing... then I get, "Carsoft Has Encountered A Problem And Needs To Close..",error followed by a shutdown of the program. Any idea on what I can do to fix this? I am connecting under the hood because my OBC In-Car connector doesn't seem to work (like the others I have seen here who have the same problem).
Hope you can help and look forward to your reply! Thanks Again! :cool

This is a common problem which is usually related to bad "Crack" files that are floating around. The folder that works contains 10 files including instructions whereas the bad folder contains only 6 or 7. I have PMed you with the info.

Get SP1 from here http://www.carsoftinternational.com/bmwdownload.htm . If the "Crack" folder contains less than 10 files including instructions after you have downloaded the software, PM me.

I have pm'ed you some further info and have posted a copy here for the information of other members who may have run across the same problem:-
There are several possible reasons (assuming that you are attempting to run the diagnosis with the ignition switched on but engine turned off (dash lights should be on).
1. The "Crack" folder that you used may be incomplete. Check the folder, it should contain 10 files, including instructions. If not, email me and I will send you one that works.
2. Right click on your "Programs" folder from the "Start" menu and choose "Explore". Locate the Carsoft folder, which should be in the "Program files" directory. When you left click on the Carsoft Folder it should contain a folder called "BMW". Choose the BMW folder and make sure that it contains only one file with a "CS V6.5" icon. That file should be called CARSOFT. Double (left) click on the CARSOFT file and it should open the diagnosis screen. Click on the _____?_____ drop down menu and choose "Info about Carsoft" to make sure that it is version 6.5.06. If the version is 6.5.05, SP1 is not installed. If there are 2 "CS V6.5" icons, double click on each in turn to view the version information as described above. Delete the icon for version 6.5.05 and rename the other CS V6.5 file CARSOFT.
3. You may have a blown fuse or faulty cable. Check all the fuses in your car and attempt a diagnostic again. If unsuccessful, try another cable.
4. The battery in your vehicle may be low, check output voltage to make sure that it is >12volts.

hi David
I have have Carsoft 6.1 and it appeared to work for the most part but it did not do what I wanted it to do, specifically alter the tick over speed on 1997 525 tdi se. I have tried your suggestions to install 6.5, i have managed to install it (i think) but when i try to run a diagnosis i get a error stating that there is a problem with the diagnostic cable, now this is the same cable as did work with 6.1 so is it a problem with 6.5 or my cable?. I would apreciate any suggestions that you may have.
what i actually want to do is to up the tickover speed as i have a bit of rough idle.

Rrosscoe,
Carsoft 6.1 will run using my interface but I am not sure about running 6.5 on version 1 interfaces. Cracking 6.1 is a lot easier than 6.5 however so I would suggest that the first thing you should do is to look at the Crack folder you used with 6.5 to make sure that it contains at least 10 files including instructions. If not, email me as per the previous posts.

HI David, I got carsoft 6.5+sp1+cracks from bit torrent, I downloaded the software with SP1 and the crack, by the way, the crack folder contains only 4 files. 3 executables and 1 text file instructions. My question, is the software with the cable only sufficient, to do diagnostic and read data from a BMW E39 20 pin connector? Or carsoft comes with a special hardware that we connect it to the laptop.

David, just registered on this forum thanks to you. I have been trying to get carsoft 6.5 to work on an my e60 530d 2004 for months. My old Packard bell broke and i bought a new sony vaio and was told the usb convertor was the problem. So sent for a pcmcia card for another vaio i had then sent for an express card for the newer one.
The only reason i new it was nearly working was that i could get live data. After trying forever i gave up. Then the other day my increased emissions light came on and i thought i would have another go and found your post.
It worked fantastic, done full diagnosis and told me what was wrong with my park distance control and switched of the engine light and its not came back on so figure that was due to low fuel.
The only light it isnt working with is my airbag light. Maybe cause the faults still there but its not telling me the problem. However this is a 2004 model so i am pretty pleased.
Does anyone know where you can get a list of the codes and also it gives you a bmw part no. and i have the etk disc but the numbers dont match. However bmw could tell me what it was.
Thanks again mate.

Hi DAVID (and other members),
The carsoft 6.5+sp1 I got has the crack folder which contains 4 files.
Do you have the adress or something like that, so I can get a correct version.
Thanks for the instruction you wrote earlier, sure to use it when I get the correct version. (and an old laptop).
There was a funny thing I read when I was browsing about carsoft etc.
someone wrote that you needed 2 serial ports, that is in my believe not true???
it is either OBDII or the 20 pin under the hood, that's what I thought....
I'll got the cable set from ebay, OBDII and the 20 pin and the BMW compatible interface V6.5 (guess this is the carsoft version it should use) and it stated that it is the Version 4).
A site (I could not find that site again, let you know when I will) stated that when digital connection failed, you could also try analog connection.
whats the main difference and is digital test better then the analog?
Hope to see your replies.
Thanks alot.
David Mc
05-14-2008, 04:03 AM
PM me with an email address that will handle a 4Mb attachment and I will send you a working Crack folder. Early versions of Carsoft (circa v 3.1) used 2 ports rather than a single port as is used by v6.1, v6.5 etc.
When the software suggests an analog test in the event of failure of the digital test, it means that you should conduct a discreet test of the failed component using a multimeter rather than attempting to diagnose the component failure digitally via use of the Carsoft program.

Looks like I may be trying this soon. My main goal is to align EWS with DME on my S52 swap.
Also, is this able to change the instrument cluster odometer from metric (km) to imperial (miles) and vice versa? That would be a bonus!
David Mc
05-16-2008, 09:23 PM
Carsoft does have a "Vehicle coding" function under its special functions menu, which includes changing display information between km and miles and consumption figures from mpg tp litres per 100 km. I have had no cause to try it so I don't know any more about it other than that it is listed under E46.

Everything was going great, hooked it up to the car and booyah diag cables faulty error...This sux, I contacted seller and have had no luck...I believe something is wrong in the software as everyone seems to get this but I can't find a fix...I looked at the pdf that david posted but it doesn't tell me much. So I unhooked the cables and ran total diag and the carsoft error returns with cables faulty error...How can they be faulty when they are not hooked up...any ideas would be great thnx:help

Wiki, If you have an interface with 2 plugs it sounds like it is for a very early version of Carsoft (e.g. v 3.1), not Carsoft v 6.5. Can you please post a picture of your interface.
EDIT: I have just looked at your interface and can confirm that it is the one used with the early versions of Carsoft (up to v 3.7). It is not suitable for use with the later v6.5 software.

Hello David MC,
I have a couple questions you might be able to help me with:
1) I was reading Carsoft lets you reset the adaptation values of the DME: are we talking about things such as LTFT (long term fuel trimming)?
2) How strong are the live data functions? Can I for example record different parameters, export the in a CSV value and read them in excel? Let's say I wanna see if I'm running reach or lean and I wanna check what would be the O2 voltage at different RPM, under differnt load condition: can I do it?
Thanks

The only way to record live data is to use your computer's Printscreen function to copy and paste the info into a word document - cumbersome but it beats scribbling 5 pages of live data out with a pencil. The Carsoft 6.5 review by DJGenius shows most of the functions available on Carsoft, which does not support DME remapping or fuel trim adjustment.

Carsoft is all working fine now.
I run a full diagnostic, deleted all the cides and re-ran it. Only problem i have left is a code coming up on the instrument cluster section. It says BF Instrument cluster internal Error. Does anyone now what this means????
The cluster seems to be fine, the only thing i would say is the Red light behind the temp gauge comes on when yoy first turn the key to position 2, but it goes out straight away. oh also, i have fitted angel eyes and they flash again, when you first turn the key to position 2 but go out straight away (these are wired throught the side lights so you only get the rings when you turn them on)
any ideas would be appreciated

I jumped to the ebay search for the Carsoft hardware right after I crushed on ya thread yesterday.
I finally came across to this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&tc=photo&ih=012&category=43989&viewitem=&item=220212511824&_trksid=p1713.m153.l1262 (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?type=3&campid=5335818596&toolid=10001&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Febaymotors%2Fws%2 FeBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26tc%3Dphoto%26ih%3D012% 26category%3D43989%26viewitem%3D%26item%3D22021251 1824%26_trksid%3Dp1713.m153.l1262)
Do you think this thing gonna works w/ ya Carsoft software?
Thanksssssss in advance,
George :)
Is is possible to fabricate a cable out of an old serial cable and some paperclips to go into the Diag port, using the information on the eBay auction?

The thing about it it's not the cables that are most important in the kit. It's the interface unit. Cables are just simple cables to transfer all the data and information. Interface is doing all the THING - coding and counting stuff. That's why it is believed Chinese kits aren't as good as original, because they didn't copy the interface as good. But... thing's changed and we all know those little f***ers are very clever, so they've actually improved over the time and made pretty good copies that work 90%-100% as good as original.
Just to make things clear, take a look at the cable and interface schemes:

Without the firmware for the AT89C2051 processor on the little PCB you won't get very far making your own interface.

Hi all, The cables came with the unit of Ebay. Be warned, purchasing from ebay 99% of the time means the software is copied and will not work. Finaly got mine working with the help of DavidMC.
Just another note for you all:
When you get carsoft finaly working, when you use the vin/milage reader, the milage will be read in kilometers not miles (even if you set the carsoft to milage). I sh#t myself when the reader came back with 131,000 when the instrument read 82,000. This can be confirmed if the mileage tamper dot is not shown (the dot appears with any attempt to change any milage details on the cluster, it is in between the km or milage trip meter and the designation to km or m)

Hi!
I read your success story with carsoft & did exactly as you said and i was pretty much successfull too. Though most of the modules it could not read but it gave me error code what i was looking for. I think you are great. Now i have the error code but i cannot get much out of it, so may be you can help me with this :
I have X5 2001 model and my DSC/ABS/BRAKE lights are ON. the error code carsoft gave is :
Supplier : Bosch
Device Nr:1423955
Hardware Nr:29
Diagnose Index :10
Bosch Hardware Nr :00000000000
Bosch software nr : 648
Production Nr:002
149 CAN - ABS/DSC wheel speeds
It seems like wheel speed sensor, but which wheel?
Please if you could help me?
Finally, after 3 months of experimenting, copying and deleting files, computer harddrive purging and reprogramming I have succeeded in making Carsoft 6.5 SP1 work with my E36!
I can now conduct diagnostics and read live data and have access to all of those nice little extras like door lock programming etc..

There is no such thing as wheel speed sensor. The only sensor in ABS system is ABS sensor. The sensors are located in the trailing arm at the back of the hub. Give them a good clean with WD40, that might help. Then reset the error with a Carsoft and give another test.

This car soft kit and the sfotware it comes with ( on ebay, or anywher else)
What can you do with it? I know this is not the full DIS kit.
but one reason i wanted to know was that does it activate the alarm system for the BMW ( DWA) the list of supported features on most ebay sites says that it does not do that for a E46.. any ideas.
if someone could please point me to a place where all supported features are listed, ill greatly appreciate

You need an interface as well, mate. As I mentioned before, the interface (the small box that cables plug in) is 90% of all the kit. It's like a brain of the kit, the most important part. NOT THE CABLES!!!

You need to extract whatever you downloaded into your C:\ drive, try avoiding long path names (it's the name where your files are located "C:\Program Files\Johns Folder\Diagnostics\Carsoft\BF_Files Folder" and etc.) You can see your path at the top of your explorer. Try avoiding this type of paths, so instead place the extracted files in "C:\Carsoft files\".
All the rest doesn't work simply because it hasn't installed it fully and properly.

Chris,
Download the Carsoft v6.5 software, SP1 and installation instructions from here http://www.4shared.com/dir/7137899/6e9cd794/sharing.html .
The SP1 file is the one named BMWv65SP011ENG.exe . Follow the installation instructions to the letter (no shortcuts). I have yet to hear from someone who has loaded software from this site correctly and could not get it running.

OK, I get it now. The path is too long in archive .rar file. There are too many folders in other folders and etc. So you need to double click on the Carsoft archive file and actually go inside .rar file, you should see the files that are compressed in there. Go inside the folders there and extract the files manually. That's what I did. If you still have questions, post in here and I'll make step by step tutorial how to get away from this.

Anybody have Carsoft Ultimate Pro 1.0 working? It looks like it should work with anything OBDII as well.
DJ Genius
06-20-2008, 05:45 AM
Working with compressed archive files (*.rar)
First of all you need to have compressed archive file with an extension of .rar, something like this "FileName.rar".
The easiest way to extract the files is press the right mouse button over the file you want to extract and choose the option "Extract to FileName\", that means it's going to extract everything into a created FileName folder in the same directory the original file is:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t30/djgenius10/DIYs/Carsoft/RAR%20extraction/Picture1.jpg
After the extraction you should have FileName folder in the same directory as your compressed archive file FileName.rar is.
But sometimes this easy way doesn't work. For example if there is a long path inside the compressed file, like folder in another folder and that folder is placed in another one and etc. So to extract those files you'd need to extract them manually. To do so you need double click the left mouse button on the file you want to extract, you should get inside the compressed file and see all the files compressed:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t30/djgenius10/DIYs/Carsoft/RAR%20extraction/Picture2.jpg
Go inside the "BMW" folder and select all files except "ENG" (click on every file holding CTRL keyboard button), because this particular folder is causing that "Path too long" error:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t30/djgenius10/DIYs/Carsoft/RAR%20extraction/Picture3.jpg
Then press the "Extract To" button/icon on just below the MENU bar and the other window should pop out. You need to select your C drive on the right hand window and you should get "C:\" in "Destination Path" small window, in addition, wite "CARSOFT\" in there so it would look like this "C:\CARSOFT\":
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t30/djgenius10/DIYs/Carsoft/RAR%20extraction/Picture4.jpg
Next, click OK button, all selected files are extracted to the folder "CARSOFT" on drive C:. Now we need to extract the last folder "ENG" (remember, we left it unselected before). So we select only the folder "ENG":
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t30/djgenius10/DIYs/Carsoft/RAR%20extraction/Picture5.jpg
And extract it into the folder "C:\CARSOFT", like here:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t30/djgenius10/DIYs/Carsoft/RAR%20extraction/Picture6.jpg
It looks like everything's done, so go and double check if all the files were extracted. Go to the folder "C:\CARSOFT\BMW" and that's what you should see:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t30/djgenius10/DIYs/Carsoft/RAR%20extraction/Picture7.jpg

Eric, for our English speaking companions the rough translation of your errors are (17) that the fuel injection signal is not within normal parameters and (15) that there has also been a problem with the signal to the tacho. The third (230) is probably the cause rather than effect as it means there is poor response from the Oxygen sensor in exhaust Bank 2. I would try cleaning the O2 sensor, clearing the codes and running another diagnostic.

I have a couple of questions I would like to ask just to make sure that I am doing the right thing.
1) Can you read live data from the 20 pin connector under the dash?
2) I only have the amber P light on my interface. The K20, K17, and L15 blink when accessed, but do not stay solid green. Is that normal?
I originally tried this with a Vista notebook, but had no success. When I used an XP system, I was actually able to connect to most of the modules, read the error codes, and reset things like the airbag light, and SI indicator.
After checking the fuses in the car, I am still not able to pull live data from DME. I cannot connect to that Module at all.
Is it possible that this USB to Serial adapter is causing the problem?
From what I've read, most people can access live data without an issue. Is it possible the software isn't right?
Thanks for the help. I really appreciate your assistance with all of this :)

hello Stevek
this is my first post here
i have exactly the same problem and the same diagnostic "bad connection"
from my compaq laptop,
no COM port so im using a serial/usb adaptor (dynex)
can you tell me please, how did you get it running?
i'd appreciate very much

Usually it's because of a dodgy adapter, I have DELL Laptop and USB/serial adapter and it doesn't work, I also got PCMCIA card adapter, but have problems connecting it to laptop. The best thing is built in serial port, sad it's only on old laptops.

Exactly what DJ Genius said. I had a great deal of luck when I used XP instead of Vista, and then even better results using the built in COM port off a desktop that I dragged down into my garage.
I picked up a port replicator for an old IBM notebook I have, and am going to see if the COM port on the replicator works the same as having it built in (it should, its designed to do exactly that).
I still haven't been able to pull live data, but am going to try the OBD2 connector inside the car tonight to see if that is the reason.
Two things to keep in mind (based on what I've seen):
1 - Put the ignition in position 1 and try to read a module.
2 - If unable to read the module in position 1, try position 2
Some of my modules read from P1, some from P2.

if you do a single diagnosis it should give you the exact code. It won't give you the codes if you perform a total diagnosis.

I know it happened to me when I was messing around with files, I got it only in German. I can't remember what I did, but I think I opened a wrong file. Did you notice you need to rename the file after all the installations? Just follow the exact steps David provided and you should be OK.

^^ I found that the serial port is essential ....had to switch laptops despite having bought a usb/serial adapter ...just didn't work
BTW Is it just me, or does anyone else find they are missing the Activation code with Carsoft? Or maybe it's just not necessary?

Here is the info you need re the authentication code http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=13089394&postcount=110 . If you need the proper crack file, PM me, or alternatively download a working version of the software from here http://www.4shared.com/dir/7137899/6e9cd794/sharing.html and reinstall as per the instructions available on the same site.

Did you follow this part of the insructions?
It sounds as if there is still a resident file or entry on your computer or in its registry.

First off thanks DAvid for the instructions and links !!!!
awesome stuff
it seems to all have worked for me ....
except the activation code part ..... the box pops up and I cant enter the code , but when i close the box Carsoft seems to work .....
Does this sound like its working properly????

id assumed the activation code informs carsoft that you bought it (which we didnt!) and gives updates ...but it seems to work ok without it.. so (or does it?) ?
David Mc
07-10-2008, 07:58 AM
The activation code actually enables the software to run but if you are able to run diagnostics and access live data all is OK as the cracks are actually just a workaround to avoid the requirement to enter an activation code.

I bought a carsoft 6.5 cdrom off ebay some months ago .. same issue with that. it only works if i open from the cd and not install it onto the pc ( in this event it doesn't work) ... it runs seemingly normally if i click on one icon (the one with 6.5 written in it) in the list however if i click on the blueish laptop pic icon it asks for the activation code and will only take me to screens showing the hardware in photos company HQ etc. presumably the one i bought off ebay is cracked also despite the fact that it has no activation /update code. what screen do you get if you enter an activation /update code? it's really just a question of not knowing what happens (if anything) with theis activation code.
David Mc
07-10-2008, 03:40 PM
The actual Carsoft program is the one activated by the CS v6.5 icon. The Blue Laptop is only a file which is why when you open it all you see are the help screens and the activation code prompt. When the software is cracked properly and installed the Blue laptop file is actually replaced with one that contains only the help files and no activation code request. Entry of the activation code in the original software only removes a stop which would normally only permit the program to open upon entry of the proper code (as it does when cracked, but without the requirement for code entry).

Hello,
I don't mean to re-ask the same question, but I have now read the entire thread twice and can't seem to find a solid answer before I buy carsoft on ebay. Will carsoft allow me to get live data from my 1994 318is (e36) with an OBD I?

No, you won't get LIVE DATA from OBDI car, only from OBDII cars :)
Just to get an idea what you're getting when buying Carsoft v6.5, read my thread (in the sig).

Thanks a lot for your quick reply.
Carsoft seems like the best program and I will probably end up getting it. Darn, I just wish there was a way to get live data from my obd I. Are there any programs other than carsoft that can get me live data - it is one of the main functions I am looking for.

Not really, because that's why there was OBDII invented:) The biggest update on OBDII was availability to get LIVE DATA + other useful modules.

It you are using the OBD2 port under the dash, you must make sure that the cap is on the 20 pin BMW diagnostic connector under the hood. The cap is fitted with jumpers that connect pins in the diagnostic port when it is in place and if it is not, you will not be able to access all the info via the OBD2 port. It is normal for all lights but the service light to be on when you are connected. Try this link for a few general Carsoft troubleshooting tips http://www.4shared.com/file/55507561/a1ae5f47/Carsoft_Trouble_Shooting_Tips.html

You guys are great, I had the problem with my desktop. I tried on my laptop at work from the C: drive and the program is up and running. I ordered my cable, so we'll see how things go from there.
Has anyone actually been able to do a EWS align (sync) with Carsoft?

Hello guys,
I am having troubles to force the CARSOFT 6.5 run. I bought interface from german ebay, but no success to make it work. When I start any scan (either complete test or picking up any of modules), I get the same result - after progress meter gets half-way, program falls down and closes with standard windows error message (carsoft encountered problem... send/don't send blah blah...) I have tried different copies of CS6.5 and also this that's link is posted in this thread (also with service pack1 installed), but still same outcome. I have also tried old CS 6.1 - alike a CS6.5, programm does not exit, but I get only "does not response" on every module. I tried with my laptop DELL with real COM port and also with duty laptop AVERATEC with USB to COM adapter - both systems with XP SP2 - same outcome. Testing car is E39 530d 2002. Tomorow gonna try on my friend's E46 318i 1999 with old 20pin socket, but I have strange feeling it will end up the same. Any idea what might be wrong??? Thanks in advance for any tips how to start sorting it out.
